Center for the interpretation and reproduction of the Mediterranean tortoise in Marça

On June 28, visit the center, and first of all I have to thank Lluis Pena for his explanations and kind attentions. Serve this article as a thank you to your daily work, and to the City Council of Marça, Tarragona, Spain for your effort in conserving this species.

The center is focused on the conservation, reproduction and reintroduction of the Mediterranean land turtle (Testudo hermanni hermanni)

This recently opened center is linked to the recent location of a wild population in the municipality of Marça. This population is not clear if it is totally natural or naturalized as a result of leaks [1], but the truth is that it has about 300 specimens of testudo hermanni hermanni in a natural habitat, which corresponds to the historical range of the species

It is of vital importance for the Mediterranean land turtle to maintain the wild population of Marça, since keeping this species in remote places prevents the disaster that for them as they are, the forest fires, these form part of the natural cycle of the Mediterranean forest, where they live and possible epidemics.

Marça, in addition to maintaining the wild population, in this center discloses its knowledge, rehabilitates sick specimens and reproduces the species in captivity, in order to reintroduce it into its natural environment.
Purpose of the center:

First: The recovery of specimens of the Mediterranean land turtle (Testudo hermanni) with health problems, and more specifically centered on the one that lives in Catalonia (testudo hermanni hermanni)

Second: Reception of captive specimens, recovery and weak specimens found in nature, after the recovery, the animals are used as reproducers in the same center, and later the pups are used to repopulate the natural environment.

The center also maintains allochthonous turtles that are used for educational purposes, at the time of my visit observe Trachemys scripta elegans and testudo hermanni boetgeri

In my humble opinion: It would be necessary to tolerate the maintenance of the species in captivity by private individuals and not only by public entities, making them see that they have something that has become a treasure, and that they can participate in the breeding and repopulation of nature with estates such as the CRAC, SOHEVA and AHE, I am sure that in a few tens of years the natural environment of thh would be repopulated instead of trachemys scripta and similar, and with little cost for the public coffers.

Sierra de Llaberia, municipality of Marça, Tarragona, Spain.

Located in "casalot de la Miloquera", in the house known as "Mas de l'escultor", it belonged to Marçà-Giné (1918-2006), Marça and Lula Pérez-Marsaginé, originally from the Philippines. they moved there at the end of their lives.

Marcel·lí Giner i Folch that the real name of the sculptor, was at the end of his life a man of strong and eccentric character, his wife left the house going to live sheltered in the village with some nuns, and the sculptor came to the agreement to donate the house, land and some of his works in exchange for the City Council to take care of both. Currently it is an extraordinary enclave for the conservation of the species Testudo hermanni hermanni.
